Land and Ocean Using SeaWiFS Measurements from 1997

چکیده
15 Both sensor calibration and satellite retrieval algorithm play an important role in the ability to 16 determine accurately long-term trends from satellite data. Owing to the unprecedented 17 accuracy and long-term stability of its radiometric calibration, the SeaWiFS measurements 18 exhibit minimal uncertainty with respect to sensor calibration. In this study, we take 19 advantage of this well-calibrated set of measurements by applying a newly-developed aerosol 20 optical depth (AOD) retrieval algorithm over land and ocean to investigate the distribution of 21 AOD, and to identify emerging patterns and trends in global and regional aerosol loading 22 during its 13-year mission. Our results indicate that the averaged AOD trend over global 23 ocean is weakly positive from 1998 to 2010 and comparable to that observed by MODIS but 24 opposite in sign to that observed by AVHRR during overlapping years. On a smaller scale, 25 different trends are found for different regions. For example, large upward trends are found 26 over the Arabian Peninsula that indicate a strengthening of the seasonal cycle of dust emission 27 and transport processes over the whole region as well as over downwind oceanic regions. Comparing the ocean color measurements between MOS and SeaWiFS: a vicarious intercalibration approach for MOS
The modular optoelectronic scanner (MOS) is a German instrument that was launched in the spring of 1996 on the Indian IRS-P3 satellite. With the successful launch of NASA’s Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) in the summer of 1997, there are now two ocean color missions in concurrent operation, and there is interest within the scientific community to compare data from these two sens...

ABSTRACT Measurements of the lunar surface in the visible and near infrared wavelength regions provide a new and intriguing method of determining changes in the sensitivities of Earth observing radiometers. Lunar measurements are part of the calibration strategy for the instruments in the Earth Observing System (EOS)' and part of the calibration strategy for the Sea Viewing Wide Field of View S...

The National Aeronautics & Space Administration (NASA) Sea viewing Wide Field of view Sensor (SeaWiFS) began operational measurement of ocean colour in September 1997. Upgrades to the SeaWiFS data processing system (SeaDAS) have occurred frequently and the effects of these revisions on the remotely sensed estimates of chlorophyll-a concentration (chl-a) have been significant. Measurements of ch...

We report on the lunar and solar measurements used to determine the changes in the radiometric sensitivity of the Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS). Radiometric sensitivity is defined as the output from the instrument (or from one of the instrument bands) per unit spectral radiance at the instrument's input aperture. Knowledge of the long-term repeatability of the SeaWiFS measurem...

The Sea-viewing Wide Field-of-view Sensor (SeaWiFS) provides global monthly measurements of both oceanic phytoplankton chlorophyll biomass and light harvesting by land plants. These measurements allowed the comparison of simultaneous ocean and land net primary production (NPP) responses to a major El Niño to La Niña transition. Between September 1997 and August 2000, biospheric NPP varied by 6 ...
